چکیده

The aim of this paper is twofold: a) to define a new concept, the welfare loss that a society can experience due to the segregation of the demographic groups that comprise it and b) to quantify this phenomenon by proposing measures that satisfy a set of desirable normative properties. For that purpose, this paper offers a framework that involves, firstly, to deal with the well-being losses (gains) that the groups have due to their sorting across organizational units and, secondly, to aggregate those losses (gains) in a proper manner. To tackle the aggregation issue, this paper embraces the distributive approach adopted in the literature on economic deprivation and poverty. In addition, this paper illustrates the advantages of these measures by exploring the welfare losses that the United States has experienced from 1980 to 2012 due to occupational segregation by both gender and race/ethnicity. Utilitarianism and discrimination

Since Becker (3), a common argument against asymmetric norms that promote minority rights over those of the majority is that such policies reduce total welfare. While this may be the case, we show that there are simple environments where aggregate sum of individual utilities is actually maximized under asymmetric norms that favor minorities. We thus maintain that without information regarding i...

Living apart, losing sympathy? How neighbourhood context affects attitudes to redistribution and to welfare recipients

Rising levels of income inequality have been directly linked to rising levels of spatial segregation.
